I remember Mary Eva Snodgrass Dean. She lived in the home of her son John William and Julia Elizabeth Payton Dean in the mid 1950's in Spencer, Indiana.Prior to her fall and broken hip around 1958 , she lived with her son "Bill" Dean and wife, Julia. She probably was no more than 5' in height and small frame and weight. She was badly bent over (probably due to osteoporosis). Her mind was sharp and she seemed to enjoy conversation with my parents when we would visit. She was cheerful and a sweet tempered lady. I regret it that I did not develop an interest in family history for another 34 years. I remember taking a picture in the home of Wm. ("Bill") Dean, around 1958. The photo was probably my first realization of the importance and significance of family lineage. The photo included Mary Eva Snodgrass Dean, her daughter-in-law Julia E. Payton Dean, grandson Minor Dean's wife Betty, and great granddaughters Cheryl and Sue; a four generation photo.Mary Eva was raised on a farm in Owen Co., IN, the daughter of John S. Snodgrass and Emma T. Payne. She was the 4th of seven children. Her father was the son of William Snodgrass and his second wife Sarah Ann Halbert. Consequently, John S. had eight half brothers and sisters, and seven brothers and sisters.Mary Eva Snodgrass married James W. Dean in Owen County, IN in March 1893 and raised a family of seven children. She is buried next to her husband at Hudson Hill Cemetery, Owen Co. IN.
